Travis Air Force Base

Travis Air Force Base is an Air Mobility Command (AMC) installation located in Fairfield, CA.  The primary mission is to provide rapid, responsive, reliable airlift of forces to any point on earth in support of our national objectives and to fulfill the global logistical needs of the Department of Defense in sustaining its worldwide activities.

Travis AFB is named in honor of Brigadier General Robert F. Travis, who was killed in a B-29 crash at the installation on 5 August 1950.  At the time of his death, the general was commander of the 9th Heavy Bombardment Wing and was the base's commanding general.  Formal dedication ceremonies were held on 21 April 1951.

Travis AFB is headquarters for the following:

  • The Fifteenth Air Force
  • 15th Expeditionary Mobility Task Force
  • 60th Mobility Wing (Air Mobility Command)
  • 60th Medical Group
  • 349th Air Mobility Wing (Air Force Reserve Command)
  • US Army’s 3rd Brigade, 91st Division (Training Support)
  • US Navy’s VQ3 Detachment

The bases host unit, the 60th Air Mobility Wing is the largest air mobility organization in the Air Force with a versatile all-jet fleet of C-5 Galaxy cargo and KC-10 Extender refueling aircraft.  Preparations are in progress for receipt and operation of the C-17, the newest Air Force cargo aircraft.  As the host unit of Travis Air Force Base, Calif., the wing controls more than $11 billion in total resources, including 6,383 acres, 1,790 buildings and about 2,720 military family housing units.  Travis AFB is the West Coast terminal for aeromedical evacuation aircraft returning sick or injured patients from the Pacific area.  The 60th Air Mobility Wing crews can fly support missions anywhere in the world to fulfill its motto of being "America's First Choice" for providing true Global Reach.

Known as the "Gateway to the Pacific," Travis AFB handles more cargo and passenger traffic through its aerial port than any other military air terminal in the United States.  Additionally, the base has had a long and proud history of supporting humanitarian airlift at home and around the world. Today, the Travis AFB Team includes active military, civilians, and reservists.

David Grant US Air Force Medical Center (60th Medical Group) opened in 1988 offering to the military and their families one of the most modern health care facilities in the nation.  It is the largest medical facility on the west coat, serving beneficiaries throughout eight western states.  It is a major Air Force teaching hospital and regional major Air Force trauma center.  The facility is a staging platform for the expeditionary medical missions for both combat support and humanitarian missions.

Travis AFB has a golf course, equestrian center, bowling alley, auto hobby shop, wood shop, fitness center, aero club and child day care facility to name a few.  It is centrally located between San Francisco and Sacramento, a couple hours from both the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Mountains.
